I started making braided challah only a few years ago. I tried many different versions and eventually settled on a recipe of my own, based on various challot that I’ve tasted over time and those that some of my lovely Ashkenazi students and clients have shared with me (for which I am grateful). It undoubtedly has an Ashkenazi influence as the dough is slightly sweet, and it contains eggs and oil, making it more brioche-like than the bread loaf I grew up with for Shabbat. Perhaps t
