My great aunt Mary has been making a version of these tender cookies for as long as I can remember. These aren’t the types of cookies that need icing. Instead they’re simply decorated with sprinkles and colored sugar before baking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • cups powdered sugar

Method

  • Cream butter and powdered sugar together in a large bowl.
  • Stir in egg, vanilla, and almond extract until well combined. Stir in flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
  • Divide dough in half and form them into disks. Wrap well with plastic wrap and refrigerate discs for at least 3 hours or overnight.
