Making your own hummus is simple and it freezes well too. For the best flavour, use freshly ground cumin and serve the hummus at room temperature.

Beans and chickpeas are packed with protein and fibre, while cumin is carminative so reduces any digestive side effects. Tahini paste, made from ground roasted sesame seeds, helps lower cholesterol. If someone is allergic to sesame, omit the tahini and za’atar and use only 1 tablespoon of water.
