I think vodka needs a bit of help. Its main property seems to be its tastelessness, adding a whack of alcohol to any innocent-tasting drink.

So, I’ve swapped out the usual dry vermouth in a Martini for a dose of triple sec or Cointreau, which are slightly sweeter and, I think, more flavourful. And the lemon gives it zing.

Ingredients

  • 1 large lemon
  • ice cubes
  • 100 ml/ fl oz/scant ½

Method

  1. Make the sugar syrup by combining the sugar and 100ml/3½fl oz/scant ½ cup of water in a small saucepan. Stir on a medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove the pan from the heat and let the syrup cool completely.
  2. Transfer the cooled syrup to an airtight container, seal with the lid and store in the fridge. This makes more syrup than you need for this cockta
