I often make this recipe when I have too many apples and some are going over. My granny had an air raid shelter that was brought above ground after the war and this is where she stored her garden apples. We would play in there for hours as small children. When I smell that smell of apples past their best, I am taken back to that secret den in my granny’s garden – which is perhaps why I find this recipe so deliciously comforting. It is really happy food.
