The other Lucy came into work one morning armed with fruit sitting in a syrup with a bayleaf in it. I immediately loved it and we spent the day raiding my herb garden and spice cupboard, boiling up water and sugar. So often, when you want to make a fruit salad or serve strawberries they are not as wonderfully flavoured as you had hoped. Steep them in a flavoured syrup and they become magical.
