These work very well in my house as a bribe: “If you … get in the bath / get dressed / eat your lunch / do your homework … you can have one of my oat bars”. They even work with my husband.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 1 cup unpacked soft light brown sugar

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 315°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with butter and line with parchment paper.
  2. Put the butter, sugar, golden syrup and orange zest in a small pan over low heat and gently melt together. Put the oats, dried fruit and flaxseed, if using, in a bowl, then pour in the melted butter and sugar mixture. Mix well to combine, then tip into the prep
