Peaches are one of the principal delights of summer in the South-West, grown everywhere from the Pyrenees to the wilder country of the Aveyron. Apart from the usual varieties of white or yellow there are also the wild pêches de vignes, so called because they used to grow in between the rows of grapevines. They are usually much smaller, and, though not as sweet, are deliciously refreshing. Nowadays very popular and cheap are the flat peaches, commercially bred from the pêches de vi
