In a large skillet, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté until translucent. Cover and let simmer over medium heat for a few minutes. Uncover and toss again until moisture-free. Remove the onions to a plate. Do not wash the skillet.
If needed, add the oil to the skillet and sear the steaks until brown over high heat. Turn over, salt the seared surface and cook,
