A stereotype recognized among Indian subcultures is that Gujaratis (my family’s subculture) tend to like their food sweet. Indeed, we Gujaratis add sweetness to our lentils and other savory dishes, and if there isn’t any sweetness in the main meal, we have a piece of jaggery, an unrefined cane sugar with a rich caramel flavor, on our plate to eat with everything else. I am very pleased to say that I fit quite nicely into this sweet-loving subculture. Jagge
