Indian fruit salad, which combines several types of cut fresh fruit in sweetened milk, is a traditional dessert I grew up eating. It’s like cold, sweet fruit soup, and although it is delicious, it was never decadent enough for me to call it “dessert.” To make it more Malai friendly, I replaced the milk with ice cream and then added a star anise–spiced simple syrup to the fruit.
