Cacao trees grow everywhere in the Philippines. In generations long gone, families in rural areas grew cacao in their backyards, and each household would roast and grind their own beans, boasting of serving the best chocolate in town. With the advent of easy access to imported chocolate from the United States and Europe, the practice of serving native chocolate has dwindled significantly; now, handfuls of local enthusiasts recall the age-old tradition during the Christmas holidays.
