One of our early attempts to make baguettes resulted in misshapen pieces of dough so ugly and so un-baguette like that they could not be labelled as such. They did taste good though so tongue in cheek and to the great amusement of the staff, we pushed some olives into the dough, baked them and put them out for sale as ‘Finchley sticks’. They quickly gained a following, the customers who bought them came back and asked for them by name and so we kept baking them. They appear less often now t
