Growing up in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s, pumpkin scones were a familiar sight at birthday parties, school fêtes and bake sales alongside fairy bread, Anzac biscuits, lamingtons and the ubiquitous sausage sizzle. It was a good time and place to be a child! Most of these staples of my childhood result in blank stares from the British when I mention them and of all of them, it’s the pumpkin scones which should be better known. I recall pumpkins as huge, dark green monsters that bore no
