This is my alternative to offering toffee apples, which I’m sure dentists everywhere will thank me for.

  • 200 g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Place the flour, mixed spice, sugar and a pinch of salt in a food processor or mixing bowl and blitz or rub in the diced butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water and mix until it just comes together, adding a little more water if it is needed. Knead very lightly on a floured surface to a smooth dough.
