These dumplings can be eaten as a savoury dish and go particularly well with pan-fried diced bacon, button onions and button mushrooms in a red wine sauce. They are used mostly as an accompaniment in beef stews and casseroles but I also use them with a grilled steak in red wine sauce. Just one good dumpling a portion is enough, and the beauty of using this recipe is that it keeps for three or four days if chilled.
