The old-fashioned is such a hard drink to get right. It is the benchmark of a good whiskey kitchen. We cook ours up with the smoked essence of black cardamom, which has an almost medicinal edge. The apricot liqueur sweetens the bitter pill. The food critic, Giles Coren, called this the best f****** old-fashioned he had ever had. Shame he had to swear. I couldn’t show my mum his tweet.
