In Persia fresh herbs are served as mezze, and a bowl containing a varied assortment of these is placed on the table at most meals.

Method

An ancient custom is for women to eat the herbs with bread and cheese at the end of a meal. According to an old belief, this will help them to keep their husbands away from a rival. Job’s tears and mandrake in particular should turn him against a ‘co-wife’.1
