One of the happiest and most popular outings of my childhood in Cairo was to go for the day, in the company of several uncles, aunts and cousins, to an old restaurant called Le Café des Pigeons, on the way to the Pyramids. There we would feast on charcoal-grilled pigeons shot in the neighbourhood.
