Caramelized almonds, hazelnuts and pistachio nuts were among the range of confectionery sold on the beaches of Alexandria when I was a child. Young vendors paced the sands carrying confections and sweetmeats in large, flat wicker baskets, chanting ‘Fresca!’ – a name probably or
