Coffee first became popular in the Middle East in the Yemen and Saudi Arabia. It was probably transplanted there from Abyssinia, where it grows wild. According to legend, it was particularly favoured by the Yemeni Sufis, who believed that its effects facilitated the performance of their religious ceremonies, hastening mystical raptures. Accordingly, it came to receive a ceremonial character.
