Reminiscent of pumpernickel but a fraction of the work and still delicious.
Dried yeast may be used instead of fresh yeast. Follow the same method but use only half the weight as given for fresh yeast and give it more time to rise.
Mix the flour with the salt and lightly crushed caraway seeds in a large bowl.
In a small bowl, mix the treacle with 140ml of the tepid water, crumble in the yeast and set aside. After about 5 minutes, it will have a creamy, slightly frothy appearance on top.
Meanwhile, oil a 13cm × 20cm (450g) loaf tin.
