I’ve taken a bit of liberty here – hot cross buns are normally made with a yeast dough, but this scone version gets rave reviews.

Method

Preheat the oven to 250°C/480°F/gas mark 9.

Put the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Rub in the cold butter cubes until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the fruit and candied peel and mix well to distribute evenly.

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingre
