My mother may seem crass for cooking this kacang hijau hawker-style. Most Nonya cookbooks list the refined version with coconut milk. I have decided to stick to what I remember we ate, the green beans cooked in the simple syrup which was simpler to prepare. These are the same green beans that I was preoccupied with throwing into our garden to watch them grow into bean sprouts.
