This soup comes from Northern Thailand and is also commonly eaten across the border in Laos. The Mekong River forms the geographic border between the two countries but, until recently, the Thai and Laotians fished side by side on the river, and freely traveled back and forth to trade. Similarly, the two cultures blended in this area and both language and cuisine intermingled.
