As can be seen from the ingredients, the use of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg marks Gaeng Mussaman with origins outside Thailand. The aromatic spices are akin to the Garam Masala spice mix added to Indian curries, usually during the later cooking stages.
There is Thai historical reference to a feast for King Rama I, circa 1809, during which an Indian curry was served. It is believed the curry was brought by Muslim officials employed in the Harbor Department in Bangkok.</
