A timeless, classic bake, English teacakes are made of a simple ‘enriched’ dough (dough made with added eggs or butter), augmented with lots of dried fruit to create a treat that makes for a fabulous breakfast, especially when toasted and smothered in butter.
Put the milk and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently until the butter melts, then turn off the heat and add the water to cool it down.
Put the flour, yeast, sugar and spices in a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, then add the salt, keeping it separate from the yeast. Make a well in the centre then pour in the milk/butter mixture and mix
