Not only are onions almost the cheapest vegetable, but if you believe time is money, this is a terrific recipe for paupers.

Method
Stand the onions in an ovenproof dish and roast them in their skins in the oven at 180°C (350°F, gas mark 4) for about 1 hour. They give off a delicious smell of caramel.
