Find a bowl, a sieve, a wooden spoon for mixing, a knife for cutting, and foil to wrap the dough. You will also need a baking tray and a pair of oven gloves.
Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt on to a plate and set aside. Measure the butter or margarine and sugar into a mixing bowl and using a wooden spoon, beat the mixture until it is smooth and pale in colour.
