I grew up in South Africa, where I got to love sweetish carbs like pumpkin, corn-on-the-cob, butternut and sweet potato. This salad combines the earthy smokiness of griddled sweet potato, familiar to me from childhood barbecues, with a later love of Far Eastern flavours of ginger, chilli and soy.
