This salad looks like a cake, and is internationally called Herring à la Russe. The cover under which the herrings dwell is made from several layers of vegetables and mayonnaise, and is always topped with grated hard-boiled eggs. Every Russian cook has their own recipe that they are unwilling to divulge. This herring dish is served both on the zakuski table and as a main course. Many Russians would also gladly eat what is left for breakfast.
