Russians like to finish the day with vechernij chaj – evening tea. Chocolate confectionary, cookies, berries and spoonfuls of jam may be served. If something more substantial is required, a large home-baked pie is served with the steaming hot tea.

  1. Slice the apples, discarding the cores. Put the butter in a medium frying pan and heat until melted. Add the apples and stir-fry, over a low heat, for 5 minutes, until soft.
