As a child, I always yearned for crème caramel, but my mother has a problem with any dessert made with eggs, as she hates the smell of them raw. The only way she could contemplate making it for me was by adding cardamom and saffron to mask the smell. She has been making this version for years, and it has become a firm family favourite.
