Advertisements were rare in the Soviet press, but I vividly remember a half-page spread for cabbage in the Leningrad edition of Pravda. “Dear housewives,” it exhorted, “there are 137 different and delicious ways to prepare cabbage! Try them all…cabbage is not only tasty, it’s good for you.” I don’t know who determined the 137 variations, but this recipe for cabbage with noodles and poppy seeds is no doubt one of them. And just as the advertisement claimed, it’s both tasty and nutritious.
