  • 150 g (5 oz/¾ cup) urad dal

Method

Rinse the urad dal a few times in a sieve under cold running water.

Pour the dal into a saucepan, add the measured boiling water and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Once bubbling, place the lid on the saucepan and leave to cook on a low heat for around 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dal is soft.
