Peel and chop the yam into large pieces. Finely mince the chives.
Cook the yam pieces in a large pot of salted boiling water for 30 minutes. Use a knife to check if the yam is cooked you should be able to pierce the pieces easily. Drain the yam and then mash while it is still hot.
