English muffins were one of the earliest foods to be eaten with afternoon tea, served on silver muffin dishes and particularly popular in the 18th century. Muffin dishes, now found only in antique shops, were used to serve breads, pastries and muffins. They consisted of three parts: a base into which fitted a tray, and then a domed lid. Hot water was poured into the base, the muffins were added to the tray, and the lid kept them warm throughout tea time.
