Seed cake is both old fashioned and literary. It’s been mentioned in Dickens (David Copperfield), Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Arthur Ransom’s Swallows and Amazons and JRR Tolkein’s The Habbit. Seed cake was an essential element in the ‘second breakfast’. I created a hobbit-themed meal in a yurt in Highgate, north London, complete with wood burner and guests dressed as elves and dwarves.
Here is my recipe for it.
