Okra originated somewhere around the Horn of Africa and was spread through the spice route to the rest of the world. In the American south it is used to make gumbo. It is a relatively recent arrival in China, but it has been very popular in Indian cooking and the cooking of the central part of the Silk Road region from ancient times.
