In Iran, part of the Silk Road went from Rayy (Tehran) to Saveh and Hamedan (Ekbatan), all ancient cities. Saveh is reputed to have been built by the legendary Persian king Jamshid, well before the fifth century bce. The city boasts a Jewish shrine dedicated to Ester and Mordecai. Ester, apparently, went to plead the Jewish cause in front of Xerxes I, and he married her. The Magi, the three wise men, are also said to have set off with their gold, frankincense and myrrh from Saveh for Jerusa
