4tablespoons (55g) unsalted butter, softened (20 seconds in a microwave oven will do the job)
8 large, thick slices Italian-style bread

Stir together the butter, garlic, and salt. Spread it on both sides of the bread slices and place them on a baking sheet; set aside.
Preheat the broiler to high and set the rack about 6inches (15cm) from the heat source. Broil the bread, watching it closely, until golden brown and bubbly, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the slices over and broil the other side until browned. Serve hot.
