Not only does this appeal to my thrifty soul—making stock from something that is regularly thrown out—it is also rapid. Shrimp shells can often be gotten free or for a nominal amount from fish stores. Whenever I shell shrimp, I throw the shells in a plastic bag in the freezer and add more as available until I have enough for stock.
