I really dislike most canned plum tomatoes. They seem to taste of the tin and they are very salty. If buying them, try to get them without purée. For many purposes, canned ordinary tomatoes, if they are good, will have a less heavy flavor. Plum tomatoes are normally used for sauce, as they are meatier, with less liquid.
