Nannie and I would laugh that one of her old Cajun cookbooks called fried shrimp “shrimp in pants.” A similar take on shrimp is at play in this recipe for bacon-wrapped shrimp. It’s fabulous with a Dr Pepper–based barbecue sauce, which was my secret recipe until now.

Ingredients

  • 20 thick, round wooden picks or skewers
  • 20 large, fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method

Soak the picks in water for 30 minutes (so they won’t burn on the grill).

Combine the shrimp, olive oil, orange juice, ginger, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl; marinate for 20 to 30 minutes (any longer than that and the shrimp may toughen).

Heat the grill to medium-high heat (350 degrees F).

Wrap 1 bacon slice around each shrimp and secure with a pick.
