Matera is one of the most interesting cities in Basilicata. Its ancient origins are still visible in the ruins of the Sassi, a conglomerate of houses built from tufa stone. Even more interesting are the chiese rupestri, rural churches carved out of the same stone. These churches, some with original frescoes dating back a thousand years, were used as shelters, dwelling places and even wine cellars.
