I do not consider this to be a dessert in the strict sense of the word. Rather I have always used it as a good alternative to chocolate, ham and the preserved meats that are served with bread as the standard tea time fare put together by children all over Spain when they get home from school at about six in the evening. Membrillo is also served for breakfast with a good Manchego, Roncal or Idiazábal cheese.
