Contrary to popular belief, gyros were originally made with pork. Versions with lamb or beef are made, but they are not very popular in Greece. Other cultures have comparable dishes. Known as döner kebab in Turkey or shawarma in the Middle East, these versions commonly use beef or lamb as prescribed by the common religion. The famous Mexican tacos al pastor is a similar preparation inspired by Lebanese immigrants in Mexico.
