There are many tales about the roots of the native name kaiserschmarrn, which literally translates into “emperor’s nonsense.” One popular account is that the Austrian emperor Franz Josef was once very upset about a dessert that was served to his wife, but after calling it a schmarrn, meaning “nonsense,” he tasted it and, to everyone’s surprise, he actually enjoyed it. Since it found the emperor’s approval, this dish was from then on known as kaiserschmarrn.
