Dark, intensely flavoured and satisfyingly hard and brittle to crunch on, this traditional British toffee is the perfect accompaniment to fireworks and fun on Bonfire Night. The dark shards taste strongly of black treacle, but the flavour is rounded by the demerara sugar and the richness of the butter.

Ingredients

  • 125 g/ oz/ tbsp unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 225

  2. Add the black treacle and demerara sugar and, still over a low heat, let them gently dissolve into the butter.

  3. Once the sugar has dissolved
