A favourite with children and adults alike all over the world, liquorice sticks are delectable eaten on their own, or you could dip them in sherbet. You can make these the traditional way with anise oil and some black food colouring, or you can make red liquorice sticks and omit the anise.

Ingredients

  • 125 g/ oz/generous ½ cup butter, plus extra for greasing

Method

  1. Line a 23cm/9in square baking tin (pan) with foil. Extend the foil over the edges of the tin. Grease the foil.
  2. Melt the butter in a large, heavy pan. Add the sugar, sweetened condensed milk, golden syrup and salt. Stir well until the sugar dissolves.
